The vulture is the national bird of Sri Lanka. Lowland Sri
Lanka is dry Wilpattu Forest Park, Yala, Horton PlainsToday this bird is
restricted to national parks, forest reserves such as Lahugala, Kalugala Forest
Reserve, Galoya Sinharaja Forest, Dombagaskanda Forest Reserve and Kitulgala.
This animal is slightly smaller than the gum chicken. The black and dark brown
feathers have purple polished wings. A greenish tinge appears on the underside
of the stem. There is also a sharp fork on each foot. The vulture is about half
the size of a vulture.
The predominant color of its body is blackish brown. Less
because of the color. The lower abdomen of the hen has blackish brown spots.
The feet are yellow. The larvae feed on worms and insects. Apart from that, the
seeds of the Nillu tree are a very good food for vultures. The wild rooster is
an animal that loves to fight. Often the fight ends with the death of one. The
hen lays eggs throughout the year but mostly from February to May. The
tortoise's eyes are sharp. This is why it is said that seven blue leaves are
transparent. Humans are now threatened with extinction due to poaching and
clearing of the jungle habitats where they live.
All of us Sri Lankans should make every effort to protect
this bird, which is endemic to Sri Lanka and is recognized as the national bird
of our country.
