It flows 62 miles through a series of small islands and joins the Mahaweli River. The Amban River is one of the most important rivers in Sri Lanka for agricultural purposes. King Mahasen crossed the Amban River and built the Elahera Anicut and dug a canal from there King Mahaparak‍nramabහුhu (1153-1186) crossed the Amban River at Angamedilla and built an anicut to draw water into the Parak‍nrama Sea through the Akasha Ganga. Evidence for this is given in the description given in the Poojavaliya: The Rajavali and the Buddha Rajavali give similar details.to draw water to the Minneriya Lake. Even during the reign of King Mahaparakannaramabahu, this river was known as Kara Ganga and the name Amban Ganga may have been derived from the names of the two tributaries. The part between this river Nalanda and Elahera is called Ambavanaratta (present day Ambana) and the area north of it is called Surambavana. Based on the names of these areas, the Kara river was later known as the Amban river.
